During my holiday I visit my local gallery Silures gallery in Porthcawl, this gallery gives me inspiration and ideas for my own work. Their techniques and materials were really eye catching, each of them have their own style of painting and drawings. Which has challenged me to create more painting in different ways, that are out of my comfort zone.

Elizabeth Howells.

.

Elizabeth Howells is a local artist from my home town Porthcawl. She works with all sort of different materials such as water colour, Pastels and acrylic paints. Her paintings express the mood calm and relaxed with her small soft brush strokes she creates different series of paintings. This painting has been painted in Porthcawl, she used watercolours to paint a seen which shows a late afternoon. I like Elizabeth’s work because it has great colours and the painting it a loss and mot every detailed piece but somehow effective.

                                                             George Goddard

George Goddard also paints and drawings local famous part of Porthcawl, he is from Port Talbot but always seems to draw in Porthcawl. He adds a lot of different colour into his work with this summer night view he has even shown the reflective lighting onto the sand hills using a purple and blue just the same as the sky.  The technique of George paintings is almost the same as Elizabeth’s but they are calm, relax and beautifully painted.
The colours are more controlled and detailed as a beach and a summer night should look like.

                                                                       Pam Murray

Pam Murray is from the Rhondda, she has always had a passion for her art from an early age. She mostly paints and draws portraits, to babies to the elderly. She paints the faces in a detailed way and the clothes and the lighting behind the person a rough and method. The facial expresses she paints shows a happy and warm child however the black rough back ground make me think otherwise.
Pam paints people and animals all other the world, she shows different cultures and paints them all differently. I like Pam Murrays work as it is different
*I have chosen to use inspiration from Elizabeth’s work as I have use water colours before and I would like to get to know the feel of the technique. I will use her work and add my own way by using pen to show the shape of things. I will learn from this by practicing more and learning from other artist that use water colours.

Self portrait.
Acrylic Paint.
A3.
Broken.

For this painting I used a chris cross style of painting, I didn't smooth the painting by mixing all the colours  together by getting a nice even mark. The painting I have painted is a depressing moving painting and I want the mark to show that to.
I used a peach colour by mixing red and white to make pink and a bit of yellow to make it more peach. To paint my dark shade I used brown and dark brown and mix it with the peach. This then gave the right effect but still made it a dark shade, by still using the peach with the brown made it more skin like and not two separate colours.
With my chris cross effect I think it gives the painting more movement and depth in the painting, I didn't want the chris cross effect to not blend into each other I wanted is to look like the painting is broken without reading the image that has been painted.

This is the final painting.
I made the hair come around the face so I can show the closed eyes, I have highlighted by shading it a bit lighter than the face. I used a white to make it light and highlighted around the eye ball to give it shape in the face. the hand it pressing hard again the face to show hurt and frustration to i darken around the hand to make it 3D and show how hard the hand is pressing.
The hand pressing against the face covering the mouth shows that I cant not speak. scared of speaking, not having the right to speak.
The plane white back ground bring out the figure more and higlights the areas. But it also make you think beyond the white.

I think this is a successful painting, I understand whats behind the painting what are the meaning of the painting. I have had many people understand it as well.
I had this in my exhibition as a strange piece for people to think and understand it.

The entrance to the Exhibition.

These are my exhibition board.
I chose to do a confession emotion board, with 4 hard board confessions. I have wrote confession from my life and from others peoples life.
There was meaningful confessions and funny confession.

This is my sketch book board, I put all the interesting and creative things from my sketch book and made them into a scrap book but on the wall.
I used quotation, photography, and drawings all into one display.
I also but books that I made on the display so people can have a look at different things.

My pencil and pen drawing are next to it to break up the sketch book wall.

My painting are the first thing you see in my exhibition, they are on the side board but it is face towards the entrance.  I put these facing the entrance because they are strong painting and eye catching.

For the end of the year exhibition everyone in the creative arts  have to design and make a jar. We could have anything we wanted in the jar, it could link to our FMP or just something you like..
These are some of the jars in the exhibition.

For my Jar I wanted to put something in that I love as a emotion..
I use sand blasting with is a machine that blasts sand and leave the glass or plaster in a frosty coat, the sand dent the surface.  I then added different colours lights that changes for emotional colours. I wanted to cover the glass jar to hide whats inside and it will only show at night or dark areas.
This is another photo of the glass jars, which were on the teachers table.
The theme is called ' Show & Tell' which is based in a old school, the jars were a great idea because it looks like a old science school class room.

Finally finished my painting ..
To me my techniques and process do remind me of Lucian Fleud.

Lucian Freud.
The brush stroke are loose and in  different angles on the canvas moving different ways thought out the portrait, but gives shape to the human figure.
the different colours he uses such as he uses green and blue in the right painting to create tone and detail in the skin where the veins.
He uses the technique that kind of has a shape to the human portrait with the darker areas make the dents of the skins.

Pencil drawing.
I focused my drawing on myself, I have drawn a emotional drawing this is shown by the press up eyes and the hand pressed again the left eye, to show tipping away the tears.
I have used graphit pencil to get the dark areas in which I wanted, I always used 4B up to 6B pencils so get a detailed drawing.
I think this drawing is a success because you can see the shade in the face areas and the line in the hands.
Thought out my project I have related my work to Franco Clun which draws beautiful and interesting drawing almost like they are life like drawing, the detail in the eyes and face reflect objects.

This is Franco Clun Drawings, they are using amazing the dark shaded lines for the wrinkles and the shadows in the eyes. These drawings are a great reference they look like photographs which for me I would love to gain to this standard of work in a few years time.
He uses pencil and is known for it. He has drawn a lot of famous artist and actors and they are life like. the animals her draws and great you can see every strand of hairs.
The contrast on his drawing are great for inspiration, he has help me with  the depth and contrast in my drawings which I didn't know how to do.

TEXTILE Fabric Techniques.
For the project, we have to recycle old object and make them into new, more likeable objects! so I chose a old bag with food faces on it and made it into the word 'NOM !.' This then related to my project..
* First I chose my design then photo copied the design.
* Dylon Image Maker
*First you trim the photograph but leave a few miller meters of a bolder.
*Apply the Dylon Image maker paste on the photo, thickly so it can obscure the print.
*Place on the fabric with the paste side down.
*Smooth out all lumps, bumps and wrinkle, use a rolling pin lightly all the way around the image. This will to get a even images all round.  LEAVE TO DRY.
* Then when the image is dry it will have a paper base on the top  so gently use a warm wet sponge and rub off the paper leave under warm water. LEAVE TO DRY.
* After it is dry add a thin layer of image make on the top of the image, this will make sure it has all be covered and it can be wash able after it is dry and wearable.
That's it!

Painting onto fabric.
Stencil painting and normal painting.
For the stencil.
* Draw up idea of what you want for you idea. I chose a C for Cup Cake.
* I then got a piece of card and a craft knife to cut the stencil out.
* Then I mixed the paint using different colour reds and pinks.
* The I painted the gaps.

Painting using fabric painting is not the same as normal acrylic paints you have to apply thickly a add layers.
I really like my purple rocks (:

FRENCH SEAM !
 * Place the wrong sides of the fabric together with the edges matching. sew with a straigt stitch 6mm (4/4in) from he edges.
*Press the seam open and trim the edges to approximately half.
*Fold the seam the opposite way, so that the right side are now facing and the seam is pressed out to the edges.
*Complete the seam with a final row of stitching 6mm (1/4in.) from the edge. This will enclose all the raw edges.
I found this method of sewing difficult and hard to understand what I was doing how ever I got there in the end and enjoined using this seam.

Flat-fell seam
*Place the wrong side of the fabric together and sew a line of straight stitching 1.5 cm (5/8in) from the edge.
* Press the raw edges to one side and trim the under layer to 3mm (1/8in.)
*Fold the upper seam allowance under and place over the trimmed allowance. Pin all layers of fabric together.
* Edge stitch the fold sewing through all layers of fabric.

Hand Embroidery!
I have included.
FRENCH KNOT.

CHAIN STITCH.

STRAIGHT STITCH.

These are what I have used in my textiles projects.

Diary of Yasmine Jones.
My diary is part of my final major project, I have written this to show my emotions daily. I have been writing this since April to June when my project comes to a end.
Some of this writing will be deep and others my happy and more cheerful. I first adding water colour to make the diary more artistic but then decided that it was hard to draw in a diary when I've written such a angry piece.
I then started looking at Suzanne Lacy, Rape Diary.
Suzanne Lacy Rape Book, is so hurtful and depressing. She makes you think twice in to the word RAPE.
She tells people about it give awareness to the world using text. She always uses images but to make the work sum it up for me with out reading an image.

I made a book, with confessions and secret of my own, explaining myself like Suzanne explained rape.
I used the word ' Why ?' on a red circle to ask the question why about the subjects I have included in my book.

These are one of my book pages.
It is a classic thing that emotional people feel. They are scared of being their selves. Just because someone is pig headed to judge them.
This world we live in is always judging people.
Use. Brown paper, drawing paper and black ink/ stamps.

Suppression.
Acrylic on Wood
A3
2013

 WORKING PROGRESS.
My style of painting is some how different on what I am drawing, I use same brush strokes and twist the brush around to make a unusual painting effect.
The shape of the face I darken the paint to create a darker shade I then wash my brush and use a swish affect to blend in the paint with the liker shade, the show tone and shape throughout the face instead of a block affect.

The detail on my painting, I find the teeth difficult to paint but I like how they've turned out. the lips are prefect colour and shape.
The hair I use lines, I used browns, yellows and white to create a dark blonde. however I have bits of white and light blonde in my so I mix together the yellow and white to get a light colours.

. Eyes. I use a line affect that shows every detail and colour from light to dark. The dark areas I mix dark green instead of black to keep the same green throughout the eyes.
The eyes lashes are always the hardest but I use a thin brush and press the brush together to make a line then I add my colour and a bit of white to give them shade.

I used dark colours to shade and white, peachy brown. I used that because the smile I am smiling is a fake and the eyes make you think about that. The depressing colours are telling the story but the photo is hiding the true meaning of the story. HURT.
My life my body so I can chose what I do!
Drawings of a plus size women.
''If everyone were the same life would be boring''

Drawing from  life is one of the hardest skill to have, even when you are trying to draw yourself. Its difficult.
For my drawing I had a very tight top and leggings on, I then took photos of myself and draw the outline of myself. I then  added in the detail whilst everything was finished.!
I then wanted to make a sculpture of this piece because I wanted to make the statement that women today or ever don't have to be a size 8 to be beautiful, curvy women are just even more beautiful.
This is my sculpture I make using semi pro ceiling, which is another type of white clay. First I craved the body shape and got the shape I wanted before I added detail.

I craved the body shape leaning back to show she is comfortable with her body and her front is what you look at first. I didn't want my sculpture to be hiding her body. I will paining the figure white so it stands out instead of using a dark colour to hide it. I didn't up a head or arms on her because I just wanted to focus on the frame, arms can hide away a body and that's what I didn't want. I didn't want people to be distracted by her arms and head.
I used London work as inspiration, part from the materials and size.

Facial Expression.
Again I have drew facial expression but these I do more every second of the day. Bottom right is a normal look wondering beyond the mind what the person is actually thinking and I normally get asked what I'm thinking about when I use this facial  expression.
The top drawing is used for angry, annoyed and confused. This expression is my evil stare, some times I really don't know I am doing it, it just happens.
The left drawing is a sad and depressing look, not crying but hiding away for the unhappiness which the mind it thinking.
I haven't drawn the mouth because I wanted to just focus on the eyes and nose area to practice the style of drawings.

Drawings of Me. Fun Facial Expression.

During my project I have been studying facial expressions in different moods. These two facial expression  I normally use just to make people laugh and smile. [Cheeky and Love.]  So I decided to draw them, using 2/4B pencils.
I focus more on the face instead of the hair and neck, so I drew them on a up angel, the angel that Jenny Saville uses. So the eyes are always looking at you when you look at the sketchbook at the up angel.
These drawing a success because they look like me and the detail is great to look at. I will be drawing a few of these drawings for the exhibition show.

I have experimented with text on photograph of myself with quote I have made up or made note of when they caught my eye. I want to make a statement when people look at a photo of me with text.

 'never be afraid to smile'.

 another photograph with text.
Many people judge people when they don't know what they have been though. so this quote is effective. JUGDEMENT PEOPLE ANNOYE ME!!!

Playing with text. love a bit of text I do.
My quote for my project is.
Real Eyes
Realise
Real LIES.
Which for me it is extremely true.
samples: I played around using wall paper, new print, brown thin paper, photographs and fabric
just to see which one worked best for me.
I use black oil based ink.

I chose this photograph as my quote logo because it has big eye starring at you. with the quote under  the eye go well with the eyes and images.
I chose myself in this quote because I have been lied to so many times I know a lie when I see one.

1965. My beautiful daddy.! Pencil.

My dad has always been a massive inspiration to me, he tells me what's right what's wrong and the most in importantly he's always there for me. He never judges me and never makes me feel small when I've done something wrong. He has made me stick to my opinion and be my own person.
It is really great to tell your dad what he actually means to you, but I never do. Days have gone by and I haven't say ''I love you, dad'' and I don't think I would tell him every day that's just not the person I am. so if he see this, he might not bother looking. But he'll find out!
Love you daddy (:

Balloon Painting.
Acrylic on Canvas.
2013
This is a photo of my first throw of the dart, it is my first sample of doing this method, the slaps were great when the paint burst from the balloon.
I was tricky to get the right amount of air in the balloon and the right amount of paint for the air. I added water to my samples with then I  watered the paint down and made less effect, which I didn't want. I used a lot of testers to get the right amount through out the painting work.
The first sample was a success because of how far it went from the balloon. It made a lovely interesting marks on the canvas that I can not get using a straw or other materials such a straws, paper or tooth brushes.

Working on my final piece, it isn't finished yet it is a working progress. however I think this is a success already, the way the paint has splat across the canvas.
I use primary colours to start off but I will add secondary colour throughout the painting.
I made the balloon bigger but filled it with the same amount of paint, this helped the balloon burst more and get a bigger effective mark across the canvas.
I used this method to express excitement in my painting and expression in the marks that the balloon as made.

Wednesday, 17 April 2013

I think this photograph is so... pretty. It has nothing to do with my actual work but I was experimenting with  my camera and it came out like this.!

My garden is like a junk sale, full of old table to toilets seat, and out day it froze over and had massive icicles hanging from the table/ toilet! it was so beautiful.
camera - aperture mode -5;8
LONDON.
London was of course a great experience for art students, It has a variety of different art galleries that of course suit everyone including myself.
My final major project is on Emotions, and it is called 'Suppression'. I firstly went to the V&A I found all the performance part of V&A was great, all the facial expressions ever great. There was one photo and sculpture that count my eye during the time.
JOCELYN HERBERY.

Masks for The Oresteia, 1981. These masks were designed by Jocelyn Herbert for the Greek.
I found these sculpture emotional because of the way the eye, mouth and nose Is missing the facial expressions really make me think there are depressed or many people hiding away there true emotions by where this mask. The mask make me look deep into there eyes almost like their are trying to hypnotise the people looking at the faces.
During my time in my final major project I am going to make sculptures of my body shape of clay, I have used these as a reference, and inspiration to do my final pieces.
I will base my design on a actual human body shape and be exact as possible.
I really like these sculpture I find them every different and I like the jagged edge of the top of the sculpture.

HUNTERIAN
The Hunterian was a great experience for me, my emotional were pretty major in this museum, I really dislike the fact that there we foetuses in jars. I felt extremely uncomfortable in this museum.
There were a few foetuses that really got to me which was the baby foetuses...

this is crazy!

I did actually enjoy the skulls, they were extremely detailed, the lines and dents in the skills, the lost teeth were amazing to look at. I
